stone masons and labourers in a well-managed I-W
General Build team.
All of the General Build projects I-W
carries out are extremely complex and logistically demanding. Extensive
planning and forward thinking are required to ensure their successful
completion.
The results are excellent. No matter
how complex the projects, they are completed on time and within budget.
Somerset House is a good example of an
I-W
general build package. As a Grade 1 Listing Building, bringing it up to
the standards of a modern, public access building and carrying out
remedial works under strictly controlled conditions was painstaking work.
During the process some 1000m2 of the original floorboards were numbered,
catalogued and replaced in the same order.
As
the project general build contractor,
I-W
had numerous tasks including excavation and installation of under-floor
ducting, asbestos removal, carpentry, brickwork, builders works in
relation to services and steelwork. To complement the work of the 18th
century builders and architects, I-W
adopted the techniques of flitch-beam construction during floor
strengthening activities by inserting steel members into the under-floor
ancient Baltic pine beams in situ, whilst preserving the Georgian ceilings
beneath.
