St Mary Magdalene Academy
St Mary Magdalene Academy in Islington has already been shortlisted for a number of accolades. From an I-W perspective, it posed a considerable number of design, detailing and engineering challenges. Our scope comprised lightweight clay tile cladding, timber cladding, coloured render, steel framed system walling and secondary steelwork. This multitude of facade treatments led to the development of a number of unique interface solutions.
The distinguishing feature of the project is the large Ichthus (early Christian fish symbol) that dominates the Liverpool Road elevation. The Cumaru hardwood fins are cleverly routed and fitted in such a way that the fish appears to face a different direction depending on the position of the sun.
