Shap sand bags

Hundreds of sandbags filled and delivered by a team of 11 from our Shap Beck quarry in Penrith were a welcome sight for local residents defending their homes and businesses against Storm Dennis.

General foreman Nigel Holder had the idea of making and donating 500 sandbags when the area around the Cumbria site looked at risk from flooding. Nigel and assistant unit manager Jenna Roberts made flyers offering their support and posted them door-to-door in Shap, Bampton, Orton and Little Strickland.
“After a good response, we organised a team to fill them with washed fines from the quarry and to take them round a few days later,” said Jenna.

“Residents, business owners and the parish council were extremely grateful and thanked us for our initiative, quick response and community spirit.”
